Indigenous communities in Australia and Canada receive new funding

In Australia, the New South Wales government has announced $1.5 million in grants to 85 Aboriginal community organizations. The funding, provided through the NSW Cultural Grants program, supports projects focused on language preservation, storytelling, and cultural gatherings. Notable recipients include Barriekneal Housing & Community Ltd, which will work on the Yuwaalaraay Winangaylanha Walaaybaa project, and the Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council, which will host the 2026 Aboriginal Rangers Gathering.

Additionally, the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) received $2 million for its throughcare program in the Northern Territory. This initiative aims to assist Aboriginal youths and adults transitioning out of custody by providing accommodation, education, and health services to reduce recidivism.

In Canada, the federal government is investing $5 million to expand Indigenous-led alternatives to incarceration in northern Manitoba. The funding supports the Manitoba Keewatin Organization’s (MKO) Gladue Pathways to Healing Initiative. The program intends to provide culturally informed sentencing options and connect participants with housing, healthcare, and addiction counseling to address the root causes of crime.
