Australia approves $1.3bn Morwell battery project as Frontier raises $110m for WA solar‑storage

TagEnergy has secured development approval from Victoria’s Department of Transport and Planning for the Morwell Battery Energy Storage System. The $1.3 billion project will deliver up to 1 GW of capacity, storing four hours of electricity—enough to power more than 344,000 homes— and is slated to be operational in late 2029 after construction begins in late 2027.

Frontier Energy announced an AU$110 million equity raise to fund the first stage of its 132 MW solar‑plus‑storage project near Waroona, Western Australia. The battery component has been expanded to 81.5 MW with a 6.9‑hour duration, meeting reserve‑capacity requirements. The company targets commercial operation in October 2027 and plans a multi‑stage expansion to about 1 GW of solar generation and 660 MW of storage by 2031.
