Australia approves minimum pay and insurance for gig delivery workers
The Fair Work Commission has approved new minimum standards for food and grocery delivery workers in Australia. Effective August 17, the regulations are expected to impact approximately 250,000 workers.
Under the new rules, gig workers will receive a minimum hourly rate of A$31.30, which is higher than the national minimum wage of A$26.44. This rate applies to 'engaged' time, defined as the period between accepting a delivery task and its completion.
In addition to increased pay, companies are required to provide a 'reasonable minimum level of cover' for personal accident insurance for workers during their shifts. While platforms must provide accident insurance, workers remain responsible for maintaining third-party liability insurance for their own vehicles. The Transport Workers Union described the decision as a 'landmark moment' for the gig economy.
