Australia bans ‘Halloween: The Game’ over drug use mechanics
The upcoming video game ‘Halloween: The Game’ by developer IllFonic has been refused classification by the Australian Classification Board, effectively banning its sale in Australia.
Contrary to expectations regarding graphic violence, the ban stems from the inclusion of marijuana use as a gameplay mechanic. The board determined that players can use the drug to locate the character Michael Myers, providing a “gameplay advantage.” Under the Guidelines for the Classification of Computer Games 2023, games are refused classification if they feature illicit drug use linked to incentives or rewards.
The decision has sparked significant backlash, with the board receiving over 500 complaints. The situation has reignited debates in Australia regarding the disparity between film and video game classification standards and the restrictions placed on adult access to international media.
