Australia boosts Solomon Islands education through ICT donations and scholarships

Australia has provided over SBD2 million worth of ICT equipment and learning resources to the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) to enhance digital learning and inclusive education. The donation includes 50 laptops for a new computer laboratory, 200 refurbished laptops for teaching students, 72 desktop computers, and various ICT accessories for university libraries.

This initiative is part of a 2024 memorandum of understanding between the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and SINU, aimed at supporting higher education, skills development, and climate resilience. The support aligns with the Solomon Islands government’s free education policy vision.

In a separate educational development, Prime Minister Matthew Cooper Wale addressed 50 Solomon Islands students selected for the 2027 Australia Awards scholarships. The Prime Minister urged the scholars to return to the Solomon Islands after their studies to apply their skills toward national development, describing the scholarships as a “loan to your nation” that is repaid through service rather than money.
