Australia celebrates National Science Week with nationwide events
National Science Week is currently underway across Australia, featuring more than 2,000 events designed to bring scientific research and technology to the public. The celebration continues until 23 August.
In Sydney, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) is hosting hands-on experiments and demonstrations in Centennial Park and Western Sydney Parklands. These activities, which include forensic investigations, magnetic levitation, and AI demonstrations, are expected to attract up to 20,000 visitors. UNSW engineers are also showcasing the Makerbus, a mobile workshop equipped with 3D printers and coding technology.
In Canberra, the program includes workshops on mathematics, biodiversity, and astronomy, as well as the Three Minute Thesis event at the Australian National University (ANU).
Additionally, the week marks the 20th anniversary of OPAL, Australia’s only nuclear reactor located at Lucas Heights in Sydney. The reactor is used for medical purposes, research, and material irradiation.
