Australia coal exports surge ahead of COP31 presidency
Australian coal exports are reaching record levels due to rising demand from Asian markets, creating a tension between the nation's economic output and its climate leadership roles. The International Energy Agency projects global coal demand to increase by 1.2% in 2026, potentially reaching 8.94 billion tonnes.
This surge is partly driven by geopolitical instability, specifically the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, which has led Asian nations to prioritize energy security over decarbonization goals. This occurs as the Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, prepares to preside over the COP31 climate negotiations in November, where it intends to advocate for accelerated renewable energy transitions.
While the government aims to reduce domestic emissions by 62% to 70% by 2035, the coal industry remains a significant economic pillar. However, a recent landmark ruling by Australia's highest court against a major coal mine expansion has established a new precedent: fossil fuel projects must now account for their climate consequences during the approval process.
