Australia Coalition proposes major cuts to net overseas migration

The Australian Coalition has unveiled its ‘Australia-First Migration Plan’, which proposes significant reductions in net overseas migration. Under the plan, net migration would be capped at 100,000 per year for the first two years of a Coalition government, eventually rising to 160,000. Key measures include capping international student commencements at 240,000, halving the humanitarian intake to 10,000, and largely abolishing Temporary Graduate visas to reduce core temporary visa holders by approximately 650,000 over four years.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor defended the policy, stating that Australia ‘will never be a monoculture’ and promising to challenge racism. He sought to distinguish the Coalition’s stance from the rhetoric of One Nation.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has challenged the proposal, questioning how the Coalition intends to fund the removal of over 400,000 migrants on bridging visas. Burke accused the Coalition of ‘playing a political game’ and failing to account for the billions of dollars required for increased detention capacity and compliance. In response, Taylor noted that the plan could not be fully costed until closer to the election. Currently, the Labor government seeks net overseas migration at 225,000, while recent ABS data shows the rate at just over 305,000.
