Australia confirms 39 people missing in Nepal flash floods
The number of Australians reported missing following catastrophic flooding and landslides near the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to 39. Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed the increase, noting that the number could potentially rise further as authorities work through incomplete passenger lists and reports.
The disaster has caused immense destruction in the mountainous region. Nepal police report that at least 389 people have died and 466 have been injured or rescued. Sagar Pandey, CEO of Himalayan Glacier Adventures, reported that settlements in the affected area have been almost entirely leveled by the floods.
Among the missing are 15 individuals who were part of a trek organized by Himalayan Glacier Adventures, including 15 Indian Australians traveling toward sacred sites such as Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.
The Australian government has announced a $5 million assistance package to support affected communities. This includes $2 million for the World Food Programme, $2 million for Australian NGOs through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership, and $1 million for the Emergency Action Alliance. Additionally, an initial team of three humanitarian response specialists will be deployed to Nepal within 48 hours to assist staff already on the ground.
