Australia cricket: Marnus Labuschagne to retain spot for third Test
Australia is expected to retain Marnus Labuschagne for the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, despite a recent run of scores failing to reach a century. Chief selector George Bailey indicated that the decision is based on Labuschagne’s ability to absorb pressure against the new ball and support the rest of the batting lineup, even as the player struggles to convert starts into larger scores.
Labuschagne has recently scored between 30 and 49 in six of his last nine innings. While captain Pat Cummins noted that such scores are insufficient to win matches, selectors believe Labuschagne is navigating a difficult period and contributing to the team's collective stability.
Other selection considerations for the Newlands Test include Matt Renshaw potentially opening the batting, Cameron Green in the middle order, and Cooper Connolly at number seven. Additionally, a neck injury to Steve Smith may impact the final lineup.
