Australia cruise sector faces economic decline and port challenges

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has warned that a decline in cruise ship deployment in Australia is negatively impacting the local economy and travel advisors. According to CLIA Global President and CEO Bud Darr, the Australian cruise sector saw an economic contribution loss of A$1.1 billion in the last financial year, down from a total output of $7.3 billion.

Darr noted that while demand from Australian travelers remains strong, shrinking local capacity is affecting various sectors, including regional communities, food producers, transport companies, and hotels. The decline is attributed to rising costs and regulatory uncertainties.

In a related operational development, Carnival Cruise Line announced itinerary adjustments for the Carnival Splendor due to safety concerns at the Port of Cairns. The cruise line reported that current channel depths at the port have become too shallow to allow for the safe passage of the ship. As a result, the vessel will anchor at Yorkeys Knob and utilize water shuttles to transport passengers to the shore.
