Australia Cup: NPL players eyed for Mike Cockerill Medal

The Australia Cup provides a platform for National Premier Leagues (NPL) players to compete against professional clubs and gain national exposure. Since 2018 the competition has awarded the Mike Cockerill Medal to the standout player who has never played in the A‑League or any other professional competition, recognising quality, character and impact on a cup run.

Among the frontrunners are Argentine forward Nahuel Bonada of the Preston Lions, who scored twice in a comeback win over defending champions Newcastle Jets after the Lions fell 2‑0 down. Bonada has previously trialled with A‑League sides but remains an NPL stalwart. Another candidate is Thomas Giannakopoulos of South Melbourne FC, eligible under the award’s strict criteria despite limited professional appearances.

Both players exemplify the spirit of the medal, and their performances will be closely watched as the tournament progresses toward the quarter‑finals.
