Australia dairy sector shifts toward high-value protein products

The Australian dairy industry is shifting its focus toward high-value milk protein products due to a structural decline in national milk production. According to research from Rabobank, available milk protein has fallen by approximately 30% since 2015. This scarcity is driving a transition from a ‘cheese-centric’ model toward ‘protein optimisation,’ where milk is directed into premium segments such as nutritional supplements, protein powders, and high-protein beverages to maximize returns.

In the plant-based sector, BioCheese has launched a high-protein dairy-free cheddar shred in the Australian market. Formulated with pea protein, the product provides 10g of added protein per 100g. The product is currently rolling out in Coles supermarkets and independent grocers nationwide.
