Australia data center boom drives massive energy and infrastructure proposals

Australia is experiencing a significant surge in data center development, highlighted by several large-scale proposals in New South Wales. IREN Limited has outlined early plans for a 900-megawatt data center campus at Redbank. If approved and connected to the grid, the project could cost over $10 billion and increase the company’s Australian development pipeline to 1.7 gigawatts.

In Wyong, a $1.5 billion two-story data center project has been proposed for a 12.43-hectare site. This facility is expected to have a total power consumption of approximately 150 megawatts.

The rapid expansion has raised concerns regarding energy demand and economic impact. The Australian Energy Market Operator predicts that data centers will account for 14% of Australia’s energy usage by 2036, up from 5% today. Additionally, while total proposed investment in the sector is estimated at $150 billion, Oxford Economics suggests only one-fifth to one-third of that amount may be realized as actual investment within Australia, with much of the remaining capital directed toward foreign-designed hardware.
