Australia: Debt concerns and spending anxiety impact voter support

Recent polling from the Resolve Political Monitor indicates significant economic anxiety among Australian voters at both federal and state levels. Nationally, 74 per cent of respondents expressed concern regarding the federal government’s $1 trillion accumulated debt, with 48 per cent calling for spending cuts. This economic dissatisfaction has coincided with a decline in trust for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, as 23 per cent of voters cited broken budget promises as a reason for their lack of confidence.

In Victoria, voters are facing similar concerns regarding state debt, which is approaching $200 billion, and the projected costs of the Suburban Rail Loop. Ahead of the November 28 state election, Premier Ben Carroll’s primary support remains at 25 per cent. Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Jess Wilson has seen her popularity rise, with 28 per cent of respondents preferring her as premier. One Nation also maintains a notable presence in the polls, holding steady at 23 per cent in Victoria and reaching 27 per cent in national primary vote support.
