Australia defence sale: Marles targets staff relocation from sites
Defence Minister Richard Marles has reaffirmed the Australian government's plan to sell dozens of defence properties, including the Victoria Barracks in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. The government's February announcement detailed the sale of 67 sites, either fully or partially, with an estimated total value of $3 billion.
Marles expressed his intention to have staff removed from sites earmarked for sale by the end of next year, despite opposition from the Coalition, the Greens, local communities, and veterans.
Confusion arose recently when the Army rescinded an internal planning order that had suggested all staff would be relocated from Sydney’s Victoria Barracks by the end of 2026. A defence spokesperson clarified that the initial order was erroneous, though planning for some staff relocations to begin this year is still underway.
