Australia detects first suspected mainland H5N1 bird flu case

A dead migratory sea bird recovered in Cape Le Grand National Park, Western Australia tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus, raising the possibility of the first mainland case. The bird, a brown‑skinned species, is undergoing further laboratory analysis, with results expected shortly.

Western Australian Agriculture Minister Jackie Jarvis (and Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins) said authorities are treating the situation seriously and stand ready to launch a coordinated national response if the virus is confirmed. Officials noted that a second suspect bird is also being investigated, but no large‑scale wildlife deaths have been reported yet.

Experts highlighted that H5N1 has caused widespread mortality among wild birds worldwide since 2021, and that Australia has previously recorded the virus only on the remote Heard Island. The detection prompts heightened surveillance of threatened native species, biosecurity measures for poultry farms, and monitoring for any potential spill‑over to mammals, though the risk to humans remains low.
