Australia e-scooter hospitalisations triple in five years
New national data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reveals a significant surge in hospitalisations related to e-scooters and mobility scooters. Annual hospitalisations for falls from these devices rose from 1,291 in 2019/20 to 4,089 in 2024/25.
Male riders account for two-thirds of these injuries. Specifically, boys aged 12 to 15 saw the sharpest increase, with hospitalisation rates jumping from 3.6 to 54 per 100,000 people over the five-year period. This group is four times more likely to be hospitalised than girls.
Approximately three in five injured individuals suffered fractures, representing a 12 per cent increase over the last decade. The report also noted more than 150 pedestrian injuries in 2024-25. While e-bike related injuries also increased, that category includes moped-related incidents. The institute noted that new data coding introduced on July 1 will help better distinguish between injuries involving e-scooters, e-bikes, and other devices.
