Australia economy shows resilience amid easing labor market
Australia's economy is showing signs of stabilization and resilience despite recent economic pressures. Westpac's Nowcast suggests the economy may have grown by approximately 0.2 per cent in the second quarter, potentially avoiding a recession. While there remains a 30 per cent chance of a negative second quarter, recent data indicates consumer spending has helped stabilize activity.
However, the labor market has shown signs of easing. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.5 per cent in July, with employment falling by 16,000 people. Monthly hours worked also declined. While a softer labor market could eventually lead to lower interest rates, the Reserve Bank of Australia has maintained the cash rate at 4.35 per cent, noting that inflation remains too high and further tightening remains a possibility if risks materialize.
