Australia electric vehicle sales reach milestone amid road-user tax discussions
Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) have reached a significant milestone in Australia, becoming one of the country’s best-selling fuel types for the first time in 2026. Monthly sales of BEVs have exceeded 25,000 units, representing approximately one-quarter of all new vehicle sales. This marks a substantial increase from early 2024, when BEVs accounted for only about 5% of the market.
As the market shifts, the share of petrol vehicles has declined from nearly half of all sales in early 2024 to the low-20s percent by 2026. In certain months, the combined sales of battery-electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles have surpassed 50% of all new car sales.
In response to the changing automotive landscape, the Australian Government is developing a road-user charge for passenger vehicles. Scott Maynard, managing director of Polestar Australia, has advocated for this charge to be levied against all drivers rather than just electric vehicle owners. This approach aims to compensate for the taxation shortfall caused by declining petrol and diesel excise collections while ensuring electric vehicles remain a competitive and credible choice for consumers.
