Australia endorses global plan to double rooftop solar installations by 2030

Australia has endorsed the Global Rooftop Solar Declaration, a plan to double the number of homes worldwide with rooftop solar installations from 150 million to 300 million by 2030. The announcement was made by Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen at the 2026 Pacific Pre-COP meeting in Fiji.

The declaration supports the ‘300 Million Solar Homes’ initiative, which aims to make residential solar and battery systems more accessible by reducing bureaucracy, providing affordable financing, upgrading electrical grids, and training local workforces. Partners in the initiative include the Global Solar Council, Smart Energy Council Australia, and Solar Citizens.

Australia currently has high domestic adoption, with rooftop solar installed on approximately 35% to 40% of homes, contributing significantly to the national electricity supply. Proponents of the global plan suggest that expanding solar-plus-storage capacity can protect economies from volatile fuel costs and reduce household electricity bills.
