Australia Enforces Strict Car Seat Standards for Newborn Safety

Australia’s child‑restraint safety standard, AS/NZS 1754, requires all car seats sold locally to meet rigorous testing specific to Australian vehicles and road conditions. Parents are advised to look for certification confirming compliance, as overseas models may not fulfil these requirements.

Safety experts recommend keeping infants rear‑facing for as long as the seat permits, because this position better protects the head, neck and spine in a crash. While legal minimum ages exist for switching to forward‑facing seats, many organisations suggest extending rear‑facing use beyond the minimum.

Higher‑priced seats often include conveniences such as easier installation systems, premium fabrics or adjustable recline, but these features do not necessarily increase crash protection. Correct installation remains the most critical factor for safety.
