Australia environment ministers endorse Circular Economy Roadmap

Australian environment ministers have endorsed a new Circular Economy Roadmap intended to coordinate waste reduction efforts across federal, state, and territory governments. The roadmap prioritizes packaging reform, battery stewardship, solar panel recycling, and soft plastics.

While the roadmap aims to address the fact that most single-use plastics in Australia's waste stream originate from packaging, waste management groups have criticized the move. The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR) argued that the roadmap merely repackages existing ambitions from the Circular Economy Framework without providing firm deadlines or clear accountability. WMRR CEO Gayle Sloan stated, “After almost four years of frameworks and planning, Australia should be delivering, not launching another roadmap to more process.”

Similarly, the Boomerang Alliance criticized the outcome, suggesting the communiqué lacks clarity. Despite the criticism, ministers have tasked officials with examining options to strengthen packaging regulation and exploring opportunities to harmonize rules across jurisdictions. In contrast, the WMRR praised New South Wales for its specific progress regarding mandatory battery stewardship and plans to finalize solar panel regulation by the end of 2026.
