Australia EV market share doubles amid political debate over emissions standards

Australia's electric vehicle (EV) market has experienced a significant surge, with the Electric Vehicle Council reporting that plug-in vehicle sales reached 25.8 per cent of the new car market in the first half of the year. This is a substantial increase from the 12.1 per cent market share recorded during the same period in 2025. The council noted that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for two-thirds of these sales, driven by increased model availability, lower prices, and government policies such as vehicle emissions standards.

However, the industry faces political uncertainty. The Coalition has pledged to repeal the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), with Shadow energy minister Dan Tehan arguing the policy creates a “distortion” in energy demand and prioritizes “green” considerations over reliability and cost. The Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) has also noted that the NVES may be disproportionately benefiting emerging Chinese brands. While the EVC hails the rapid adoption by “average Australians,” industry leaders warn against efforts to weaken key policy measures.
