Australia EV market share hits record as electric sales outsell petrol
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Australia has reached a significant milestone, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) outselling petrol cars for the second consecutive month in September. Data indicates that BEVs accounted for approximately 24.2% to 24.9% of the new vehicle market, more than doubling the market share recorded during the same period last year.
When including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), electrified powertrains accounted for over one-third of all new car sales in September. This represents a substantial increase from the 16.1% market share seen in September of the previous year. The six-month rolling average for combined EV market share also reached a record high of 32.5%.
The growth in electrified vehicles coincided with a sharp decline in traditional fuel types; petrol sales fell by 36.2% and diesel sales decreased by 18.4%. While the overall new vehicle market saw modest growth, the shift in consumer preference is being driven by increased model availability and rising fuel costs.
