Australia evaluates industrial energy costs and carbon offset regulations

A report from Monash University’s Climateworks Centre suggests that Australian industrial regions could reduce electricity costs by up to 50% through a coordinated transition to clean energy. By sharing infrastructure and coordinating electricity usage, industries could lower infrastructure costs by 20% and reduce renewable energy curtailment by 40%. The report identifies Gladstone, Kwinana, Hunter, Whyalla, and the Pilbara as key regions where this approach could be implemented to help meet Australia’s 82% renewable electricity target by 2030.

Simultaneously, the Australian Federal Government is reviewing the Safeguard Mechanism, considering tighter restrictions on how large industrial emitters use carbon offsets. The review may introduce limits on the types or quantity of offsets permitted to ensure companies invest in cleaner technology rather than relying solely on credits. While supporters argue this is necessary for genuine emission reductions, industry groups warn that restricting offsets prematurely could harm the competitiveness of manufacturing and resource projects. The policy changes, which may impact the agricultural sector and the value of carbon credits, are expected to be drafted in early 2027.
