Australia expands AUKUS submarine maintenance capabilities at HMAS Stirling
Australia is enhancing its naval capabilities under the AUKUS trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Eight divers from the Royal Australian Navy have completed intensive training at the Pearl Harbor Ship Repair Facility in Hawaii, qualifying them to provide specialized technical services for United States Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
This capability will allow for maintenance work to be conducted at the HMAS Stirling base in Western Australia. By performing repairs locally, the aim is to reduce the downtime of submarines operating near Australia and strengthen the forward maintenance network for allied operations. This supports Australia’s long-term plan to acquire Virginia-class submarines and eventually transition to the SSN-AUKUS program.
Simultaneously, the expansion of submarine roles at HMAS Stirling has raised strategic questions regarding local infrastructure. The proposed Westport container port project, which would increase commercial shipping in Cockburn Sound, is being scrutinized for its proximity to naval operations. An independent risk assessment by retired military officials has examined the national security implications of combining increased commercial traffic with expanded submarine capabilities in the area.
