Australia expands home aged‑care subsidies and support services

The Australian federal government has announced that showering will now be a fully subsidised service under the Support at Home Program, a change described as a “game changer” for older Australians. Personal‑care supports such as assistance with showering, dressing and continence have been re‑classified into the clinical‑care category and will be fully funded from October 2026, reducing costs and removing barriers for seniors.

Advocacy groups, including COTA WA and the non‑profit Advocare, say the reforms aim to simplify fees, improve assessment processes and help older people remain at home longer. In‑home aged‑care providers stress that flexible, personalised services—ranging from daily tasks to clinical support—enhance quality of life, lessen family stress and preserve independence for seniors.

Both policy changes and industry practices are intended to address the growing demand for home‑based care and to ensure older Australians can stay in familiar surroundings while receiving the support they need.
