Australia expands RSV vaccine access for older adults

Pharmacists in Australia are now able to administer a single‑dose respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine directly to adults aged 60 and over, without the need for a GP prescription. The vaccine is offered under the National Immunisation Program to eligible groups, including all adults 75 years and older and those 60‑59 with medical conditions that increase risk.

Health officials say the vaccine provides protection for at least two winter seasons and can reduce severe outcomes such as pneumonia, heart and lung complications, and hospitalisation by up to 80 %. Pharmacists at TerryWhite Chemmart, including Bena Ong and chief pharmacist Brenton Hart, advise that a brief consultation can determine eligibility.
