Australia extends Commonwealth Home Support Program funding to 2029

The Australian Federal Government has extended the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) until June 30, 2029. This extension provides funding certainty for approximately 830,000 older Australians and roughly 1,300 service providers, including local councils and non-profit organizations.

While the extension offers stability for entry-level services such as cleaning, meals, and social support, some local leaders and experts have raised concerns regarding the broader aged care system. Uralla Shire Mayor Robert Bell noted that while the extension is vital for regional communities, a fundamental rethink of the funding model may be necessary to meet rising demand.

Additionally, critics have pointed to difficulties within the Support at Home program, citing issues such as long waiting periods for funding approval, complex assessment processes, and rising co-payments for services like physiotherapy.
