Australia extends travel insurance booking exemption to 2031
The Australian Government has extended a regulatory exemption that allows travel businesses to sell travel insurance at the time of booking. This decision follows advocacy by the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA), which argued that insurance conversations are most effective when travelers first understand their destination, itinerary, and specific risks.
The exemption, originally secured in 2021, was set to expire soon but has now been extended until October 5, 2031. ATIA CEO Dean Long stated that the extension provides a decade of certainty for the industry, particularly benefiting small and medium-sized operators.
ATIA noted that without this extension, more Australians could be exposed to significant medical and cancellation costs, potentially increasing pressure on consular services. The association emphasized that accredited businesses provide tailored coverage for specific activities, such as cruising or adventure travel, which generic online policies may not adequately address.
