AI infrastructure faces power constraints and investor scrutiny

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is encountering significant operational and financial hurdles due to power grid limitations and infrastructure delays. In Australia, data center operator NextDC saw its shares collapse by 40% after announcing that electrical network upgrade delays at its Melbourne M3 facility would defer revenue growth until fiscal 2028. These delays were partially driven by community opposition and the suspension of power pole construction by distributor Jemena.

In the United States, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is reportedly receiving billions of dollars in Nvidia GPU hardware, such as the GB300 system, only to have much of it stored in warehouses because data centers lack sufficient electricity to operate the equipment. A former Google employee noted that power and capacity constraints in the U.S. are limiting how quickly providers can deploy hardware for customers requiring low latency.

Political and social tensions are also rising. In Australia, Senator David Pocock has proposed a 5% tax on AI data center revenues to capture more value from foreign-owned firms, noting that Microsoft’s Australian data center business generated $2.3 billion in revenue but paid no company tax. In the U.S., polling indicates that 66% of Americans oppose the construction of new data centers in their communities, citing concerns over rising utility bills and pressure on local energy and water resources.
