South Africa levels Test series against Australia
South Africa secured an innings and 31-run victory over Australia in the second Test at St George’s Park, Gqeberha, to level the three-match series at 1-1. The win followed a dominant performance after rain-interrupted play.
Captain Temba Bavuma led the recovery with a career-best 179 runs, helping South Africa reach a declared total of 425-9. Marco Jansen contributed 85 runs and then took 5-33 as Australia collapsed for just 99 in their first innings. Despite a second-innings fightback from Travis Head, who scored 121, South Africa’s bowling attack, led by Kagiso Rabada (4-77) and Wiaan Mulder (3-64), ensured Australia could not avoid an innings defeat.
The match was also marked by fitness concerns for both sides, including a suspected groin injury for South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje and illness affecting Australian Josh Hazlewood.
