Australia faces calls for national domestic violence royal commission
Following a series of violent domestic incidents over a recent weekend, calls have intensified for the Australian Federal Government to establish a national royal commission into domestic violence. While states such as Victoria and South Australia have previously conducted such commissions, the Commonwealth has expressed hesitation regarding a national inquiry.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated that the government is prioritizing increased resources to combat violence and protect women and children, citing factors such as housing security and online misogyny. Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek emphasized the need for better identification of risks through systems like health, education, and mental health services, noting that the government has increased funding by more than $4.4 billion.
