Australia faces criticism over $7.3m failed climate summit bid

The Australian government is facing criticism following revelations that $7.3 million in taxpayer funds was spent on an unsuccessful bid to host a major global climate summit, specifically COP31.

Documents obtained via Freedom of Information show that 107 bureaucrats undertook 156 trips to 64 events across 31 countries over an eight-month period ending in March. Travel costs alone reportedly reached $3.5 million, with the total bill rising to $7.3 million after accounting for security and official expenses.

Opposition leaders have condemned the expenditure, with Deputy Opposition Leader Jane Hume describing the initiative as a “Chris Bowen vanity project” and arguing that the Energy Minister should prioritize domestic cost-of-living relief and energy bill reductions.

Health Minister Mark Butler defended the spending, stating that international engagement is vital for Australia’s relationships with Pacific nations, where climate change is viewed as a primary security and strategic issue.
