Australia faces happiness paradox amid wealth and housing challenges
Recent research indicates a growing disconnect between Australia's material prosperity and the personal wellbeing of its citizens. While Australians are wealthier than previous generations, measures of happiness have remained flat or declined.
A YouGov survey commissioned by NGM Group reveals that while seven in ten Australians still view home ownership as a sign of financial success, nearly two-thirds are prepared to delay reaching such milestones. To achieve their goals, approximately 60 per cent of respondents have made or expect to make significant sacrifices, including cutting lifestyle spending, working longer hours, or changing career paths.
Economic analysis by AMP Chief Economist Dr. Shane Oliver highlights a paradox where rising GDP per person has not translated into increased happiness. Factors contributing to this dissatisfaction include housing affordability, financial insecurity, and the widening divide between property owners and non-owners. Younger Australians, in particular, report lower levels of happiness despite having greater access to technology and choice.
