Australia faces warm, dry spring and increased bushfire risk

Australia is entering a warmer and drier spring season, driven largely by established El Niño weather patterns. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts above-average temperatures across much of the country, particularly in the southern regions including New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania.

Rainfall is expected to fall below average for parts of southern and eastern Australia, including the east coast. While central Australia may see increased rainfall from tropical moisture, much of the east and southwest is likely to experience drier conditions. This combination of heat and low rainfall has raised concerns regarding fire weather.

The Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council has warned of a heightened bushfire risk across northern and southeastern New South Wales, southeast Queensland, northeastern Tasmania, and parts of Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. This risk is attributed to dry conditions and increased fuel loads.
