Australia faces increased bushfire and extreme weather risks
Authorities in Australia are warning of an increased risk of bushfires, heatwaves, storms, and flash flooding due to a strengthening El Niño. In Queensland, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa councils have launched the Get Ready Week campaign, urging residents to prepare for hazardous summer weather. The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts higher temperatures and below-average rainfall, which may increase fire risks due to low soil moisture.
Research regarding forest fire vulnerability suggests that historical land use and colonization have significantly impacted fuel loads in certain regions. A study conducted in Croajingolong National Park, in partnership with the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation, analyzed sediment archives to understand fire history. The findings indicate that the frequency of fire reprieves in some forests has decreased significantly, with some areas seeing fire intervals drop from 40 years to approximately five years in recent decades.
