IMF urges RBA to prepare for further rate hikes amid inflation risks

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has advised the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to remain prepared for further interest rate hikes to combat persistent underlying inflation. The IMF highlighted that rising global energy prices, driven by Middle East tensions, pose a significant risk of triggering second-round inflation effects. Additionally, the IMF urged the Australian government to implement more ambitious productivity reforms and suggested cutting spending to stabilize the economy.

In the banking sector, major lenders including National Australia Bank (NAB) and ANZ have begun raising fixed mortgage rates, with some increases reaching 0.20 percentage points. This trend follows similar moves by ING and aligns with market expectations of a potential RBA cash rate hike in late September.

Concurrently, fuel security concerns are rising due to instability in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. While the Australian Independent Fuel Retailers Association does not anticipate immediate supply shortages, it warns that diesel prices are likely to climb, potentially impacting the upcoming harvest season.
