Australia faces record heat and historic low snow levels

Australia is experiencing record-breaking temperatures and extreme weather patterns that are significantly impacting the country's climate and seasonal transitions. The 2026 winter season in the Australian Alps has been recorded as the hottest on record, leading to historic lows in snowpack levels. Data from Snowy Hydro indicates that snow depth at monitoring stations reached levels not seen since 1973, causing several resorts, including Mt Baw Baw, Selwyn Snow Resort, and Ben Lomond, to close their seasons early.

Climate scientists attribute this deterioration to the combined effects of climate change and the El Niño phenomenon. While El Niño can sometimes result in drier conditions favorable for snow, the 2026 season has been characterized by frequent heavy rainfall that eroded existing snow cover.

The warming trend is extending into the spring season, with parts of eastern Australia expected to see temperatures significantly above average. Sydney is projected to reach up to 27 degrees Celsius, a level not seen during early spring since 1969, while Brisbane is facing a sudden temperature spike of up to 33 degrees. These shifts are expected to alter domestic travel patterns, potentially pushing Australian winter holiday spending toward international destinations such as New Zealand, Japan, and Europe.
