Australia faces scrutiny over continued paraquat use

The Australian government is facing criticism following a decision by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority to allow the continued use of the herbicide paraquat. While more than 70 countries have banned the highly toxic chemical, the authority ruled in June that it could remain in use provided there are reduced application rates and closed-valve packaging to prevent physical contact.

The authority stated there was no convincing evidence of a direct causal association between approved pesticidal uses of paraquat and Parkinson's disease. However, this decision has drawn criticism from neurological experts, health campaigners, and independent politicians. A Senate inquiry into the matter is currently being organized.

Farmers in Queensland have reported severe health issues, including cancer and Parkinson's disease, which they attribute to historical exposure to the chemical. Under the current ruling, there is a two-year grace period for products with previously approved warning labels and a scheduled phase-out for use on certain crops, such as sugar cane.
