Australia faces surge in battery-related recycling center fires

Australia is facing an escalating crisis of battery-related fires within its waste and recycling systems. An estimated 10,000 to 12,000 fires occur annually, driven by items such as disposable vapes, rechargeable tools, toys, and singing birthday cards.

Fire brigades have responded to hundreds of blazes at recycling facilities this year, including 86 in New South Wales alone. Fire Rescue Victoria reports responding to lithium-ion battery fires daily. These incidents pose severe safety risks to workers, create financial burdens for companies struggling to secure insurance, and cause environmental damage through the release of toxic pollutants into the air, soil, and water.

NSW Fire and Rescue Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell noted that these fires are characterized by their rapid onset due to the high volume of energy stored in battery cells. Officials have also expressed concern regarding an increase in battery-related fires occurring within garbage trucks.
