Australia will become the first country outside the United States to operate the AIM‑260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM). Defence Minister Richard Marles announced at the Pitch Black exercise in Darwin that the Royal Australian Air Force will purchase up to 450 missiles for a total value of about A$736 million (US$518 million).

The missiles will first be integrated onto the RAAF’s F/A‑18F Super Hornet fleet, with later integration planned for F‑35A Lightning II and EA‑18G Growler aircraft, and possible future fit on the MQ‑28 Ghost Bat. Deliveries are not expected before the third quarter of 2033. The United States approved the sale earlier in the year, capping the package at 450 missiles and ancillary equipment worth more than US$3 billion.

In parallel with the foreign purchase, Australia successfully test‑fired its first domestically produced solid‑rocket motor, the Koonibba Rising 3.0, developed with Thales Australia, demonstrating progress toward greater defence‑industry self‑reliance.
