Australia food and grocery manufacturing sector hits record employment and turnover

Australia’s food and grocery manufacturing sector reached record levels of turnover, investment, and exports during 2024–25, according to the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) State of the Industry report. The sector now employs more than 301,000 people, representing 33 per cent of all manufacturing jobs in the country. Over one-third of this workforce is located in regional communities.

Industry turnover reached $182.6 billion, while capital investment grew by 16 per cent to $4.5 billion. Exports also saw a 17.4 per cent increase, totaling $52.6 billion. AFGC Chief Executive Colm Maguire noted that the industry is Australia’s largest manufacturing sector and a vital supporter of regional livelihoods.

Despite this growth, the sector faces challenges including rising energy and commodity costs, as well as supply chain disruptions in the Middle East. To reach a target turnover of $250 billion by 2030, the AFGC is calling for regulatory support, investment incentives, and access to affordable, reliable energy.
