Australia hay fever searches peak as seasonal allergies affect millions

Hay fever, medically known as allergic rhinitis, affects more than 5.5 million Australians. Data from Google Trends indicates that search interest for the condition typically begins in August, peaks in mid-October, and returns to normal levels by January.

Search trends show a significant increase in inquiries regarding the genetic nature of hay fever and its duration. In the past 12 months, questions such as ‘Is hay fever genetic?’ and ‘When does hay fever season end?’ have seen a 500 per cent increase. Regional search patterns vary across the country: Victoria records the highest volume of searches for hay fever and allergic rhinitis, Tasmania shows a high interest in specific antihistamines like dexchlorpheniramine, and Western Australia residents frequently search for decongestants.
