Australia health report: 62% of citizens abandon health changes early

A new national report titled ‘No Compromise’, commissioned by Equal, indicates that 62 per cent of Australians have abandoned health changes earlier than planned. For nearly two-thirds of those who failed to maintain their goals, the abandonment occurred within the first four weeks.

The struggle is most significant among younger demographics, with 76 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds and 71 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds reporting they stopped health changes prematurely. Dr Gina Cleo, an Assistant Professor at Bond University, suggests that failure is often due to unrealistic expectations and ‘all-or-nothing paths’ rather than a lack of discipline.

The report highlights sugar consumption as a major issue, noting that 46 per cent of Australians consume sugar on autopilot, while 39 per cent report consuming it before they even realize they are doing so. Experts suggest that making small, manageable swaps into existing routines may be more effective than attempting drastic lifestyle changes.
