Australia healthcare: Breast cancer screening gaps and medical negligence ruling
In Australia, two separate legal and personal accounts have highlighted issues within the healthcare system. Michelle Curry, a resident of the Central West, is advocating for improved breast cancer services after her cancer was missed by two mammograms. Curry, who turned 40, noted that free breast screening is currently unavailable to women under that age in Australia. Her cancer was eventually detected via an ultrasound, a process she noted was hindered by high costs and a five-week waiting period.
In a separate matter, the ACT Supreme Court awarded a 66-year-old woman $311,500 in a medical negligence lawsuit against bariatric surgeon Dr. Calista Spiro. The court found that Dr. Spiro breached her duty of care by failing to properly diagnose the patient's conditions and failing to advise her of all treatment options. The patient suffered acute pulmonary oedema, pneumonia, and a small bowel obstruction following gastric bypass procedures, resulting in chronic fatigue and an inability to maintain her usual daily activities.
