Australia higher education proposal suggests single annual student fee
Dr. Mark Warburton has proposed a new funding model for Australian higher education to replace the current Job-ready Graduates Package. The proposal suggests implementing a single annual student contribution of approximately $10,000 by 2028.
Warburton argues that the existing scheme, introduced in 2020, has caused course fees to rise significantly, particularly in the humanities. Under the current model, average student contributions sit at $10,847, but rates vary widely between $4,738 and $17,399. Warburton’s plan aims to move away from the current system of varying costs based on degree types, which he suggests could disadvantage certain demographics, such as women, if fees are tied to potential future income.
