Australia hospitality industry shifts toward takeaway and delivery
The Australian hospitality industry is experiencing a significant shift toward convenience, with takeaway and delivery services reshaping the dining landscape. According to the 2026 State of the Hospitality Industry Report, Australians are now as likely to order food for takeaway as they are to dine in at a restaurant, averaging three takeaway orders and two home deliveries per month.
This trend has caused dine-in revenue to drop to 20 per cent, down from 31 per cent the previous year. Mordor Intelligence projects that the takeaway segment of Australia’s food service market will expand at an annual rate of nearly 12 per cent through 2031.
In response, many restaurants are diversifying their revenue streams by offering ready-made meals, retail food lines, and chef partnerships alongside traditional dining room services.
