Australia households prioritize housing costs over utility bills

Australian households are facing significant financial pressure due to rising living costs and high interest rates. Research from Finder indicates that approximately 23 per cent of Australians, or roughly 2.3 million households, have delayed or missed bill payments in the past year to prioritize mortgage or rent commitments. The most common deferred expenses include electricity and gas, followed by car insurance and credit card repayments.

This economic strain is also impacting the housing market. Equifax data shows that demand for first-home buyer loans fell by 22.1 per cent in September compared to the previous year, as high interest rates and the difficulty of saving for deposits deter potential buyers.

In response to the cost-of-living crisis, consumer spending patterns are shifting. While discretionary spending on fashion and non-essentials has declined, businesses providing budget-friendly goods and essential services are seeing growth. This includes discount supermarkets like Aldi, hardware retailers like Bunnings, and the repair industry, as consumers opt to maintain existing items rather than purchase new ones. Additionally, demand for second-hand goods through organizations like Vinnies has increased.
